The Daniel’s Place Group For Parents and Caregivers

Daniel’s Place has created a support group for the parents and caregivers of young adults experiencing mental illnesses.  The group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:00 in the evening at Daniel’s Place.  The group meetings provide oppurtunities to connect with others in similar situations. The group shares information on subjects of common interest, such as housing, medication, behavior, mental health resources, and other relevant issues.  We welcome all parents and caregivers who have young adult children with mental health issues regardless of whether the children themselves are clients of Daniel’s Place.

The format of the group meetings varies and includes discussion on specific preselected topics, open discussion on issues of immediate concern, and guest speakers.  The guest speakers have addressed a variety of subjects including SSI and SSDI benefits, housing, medication, and planning for the future care of our adult children.  Recognizing that sometimes we just need to have fun, in July 2004, the group held its first recreational activity, a picnic in the park.

In addition to the meetings, the group has created a Yahoo Group site for group members.  The Yahoo site provides an easy means for seeking advice or information on issues of immediate concern, sharing news articles, posting announcements regarding scheduling, and networking on a variety of mental health issues.  Privacy is of great importance to us so we have made the Yahoo Group accessible only to families from Daniel’s Place.  Any person interested in joining the Yahoo Group can contact the group moderator at mtccsh@charter.net.

The Daniel’s Place Parent and Caregiver Support Group and Website provide a friendly, understanding and caring place for caregivers to communicate with others who share the unique challenges of providing care to young adult mentally ill children.
